Research and Presentations on Algorithmic Bias in Ex Libris Discovery Systems
I have been so privileged to work under and learn from Franny Gaede, the Director of Digital Scholarship Services. I had no idea what I was getting into when I met her, but it turns out I was in for a journey with a mentor who challenges me, inspires me, and allows me to talk about what I would like the future to look like.
I never knew that a half-asleep scholarly journal search where I meant to type “Women in computer science” but accidentally hit enter after “in” would lead me to see “fat in women” as the first returned result. I could not have expected it to turn into a passion project, an amazing research area, and collaboration where I was not only allowed to help shape the project but encouraged. Franny’s guidance taught me how to be the best data collector and organizer possible. While she cannot fix my stage fright, she also worked with me to make sure my presentations would go smoothly.
